This popular Lifestyle programme “Selling Houses Australia” has won the annual Astra Awards in 2009, 10,13 & 14 and been nominated every year, including 2015. This series is about real people, in real houses, in real situations, the reality being that for some reason their houses won’t sell. Then comes in Andrew Winter, a residential property expert with the help of Shayna, a designer/home stager and Charlie, a landscaper, to help homeowners, sell their houses.
The results are always “wow”, yet it’s not only about the before and after, but about getting the property sold. The show chooses properties that have been sitting on the market for months, and some for years. These cases may seem extreme but unfortunately this happens all too often. There is no need to wait to get to this stage, all you have to do is prepare your house before you put it on the market.

The “Selling Houses Australia” team pinpoints all the mistakes home owners make when trying to sell their houses. The most common mistakes are (1) not decluttering and depersonalizing, (2) not fixing things that are not working properly, and (3) not creating the impression of a well-loved, well-cared for home. As they say “people sell houses and buy homes”, so when potential buyers walk into your open house they need to imagine themselves living there. They should feel it could be their home. Unfortunately it would be very hard to do so if the house looks cluttered, tired and dated, and none too fresh.

Then the correct pricing of the house is of paramount importance. Many people over-price their houses because they cannot see it through a buyers eyes. They know they loved it for many years and assume others would too. It is a good idea to go around to similar properties in the area to compare to your house – in price and presentation. This is a great eye-opener.

The promotion of your house for sale is critical too. You should treat it as a launch of a new product, which it is, when it first hits the market. The first few weeks creates the most excitement, so this is the time to find that buyer. You don’t want it to go “stale”. Choose a good agent who knows your area well, who ensures that everybody knows there is a great property for sale, by media advertising, presence on the web, open inspections and finding the buyer for your house.
