Should you paint before you sell?

Home > Blog

You ask, is it necessary to paint your walls before you sell? When last have you painted? So perhaps the answer is Yes. First impressions are everything when selling your house.

First take an honest look at the condition of the walls and skirting boards. You probably lead a very busy life and you don’t notice the marks, chips or cracks, and if you did, you just live with it long enough then you certainly don’t see it any more. Unfortunately, buyers seeing the house for the first time, notice these things straight away. Freshly painted rooms make a huge difference in the look, feel and smell of a house – all the senses that motivate potential buyers to want to move into your bright, fresh property.

Which colours are best for selling? We say “keep it neutral”. Use whites – which come in many hues, creams, or greys – which have become very popular in the last few years. The trend for 2017 is towards warmer greys, moving away from the cool greys. It is best to avoid bright colours as these can affect different people in different ways and this is not the time to have any buyer react negatively. Neutrals appeal to a wider range of people because they are softer and form a good backdrop for the selling features of the house e.g. the windows, floors and the space, and people can imagine their furniture fitting in. Introduce a pop of colour with artwork and accessories to make the rooms look bright and interesting.

Nothing says freshness like new paint, and it’s the most cost effective improvement.
